My photography and birding journey emerged at the beginning of COVID in March of 2020. While being housebound at first, we placed some bird feeders outside our kitchen windows and began to enjoy observing the many birds that graced us each day with their presence. With observation came the realization “Wow, there’s a lot of birds whose names I don’t even know.” At first, I began to dust off a few bird books on the bookshelf for assistance, then became more enlightened by updated books as well as the Merlin App and Audubon App.
I began taking photos through the windows without disturbing the birds (and keeping cozy during our winter), which led to posting some photos on Facebook and Instagram. Meanwhile, needing an indoor project to stay busy, along with the urging of my wife and daughter, I redesigned my “shop” in our small enclosed porch into a breakfast nook, moved the feeders outside those windows, and “through our breakfast windows and beyond” came into being.
“Beyond” shifted to walks in the woods and hikes along our coastline on the northern end of Cape Ann. As vaccinations helped us realize we could wander further, we began to travel again and the passion for birding began to blossom along with more interest in photography. As the two have blended, so has the growth of the journey.
This site is an attempt to document elements of the journey: the beginnings, the now, and the future. I hope you enjoy joining in the journey, as I know you have your own journeys you hold dear.
